Questions about Plivo + Actionist

How does Actionist connect to Plivo?
Go to the Apps tab in Actionist, find Plivo, and click Connect. You'll need your Plivo Auth ID and Auth Token — both are on the Overview page of the Plivo Console at console.plivo.com. Paste both into Actionist, and the agent runs a read-only account check to confirm the handshake. There is no OAuth flow for Plivo; HTTP Basic Auth with your Auth ID and Auth Token is the standard connection method.
What can Actionist agents actually do with Plivo?
Agents can send SMS and MMS messages, make outbound voice calls, hang up or transfer live calls, retrieve call detail records and recordings, manage your phone number inventory (list, buy, release), and look up whether a phone number is mobile or landline. Triggers from Plivo are not supported through a webhook today — Plivo delivers inbound messages and call events to your own server endpoint, so any inbound-event handling requires a configured webhook on your infrastructure rather than a native Actionist trigger.
Does Actionist support Plivo's WhatsApp messaging API?
Plivo's WhatsApp API uses the same messaging endpoint as SMS and MMS with a different channel parameter. Actionist can send messages via the Plivo messaging API; whether WhatsApp is available to your account depends on your Plivo plan and WhatsApp Business Account approval. If your Plivo account has WhatsApp enabled, the Send an SMS message action can be extended with the WhatsApp channel parameter — check your Plivo account settings to confirm eligibility.
Can I use Plivo with Actionist to validate phone numbers before sending messages?
Yes. The Lookup a phone number action queries Plivo's Lookup API to return the number's carrier, type (mobile, landline, or VoIP), and validity status before you commit a message or call. Running Lookup before an SMS campaign or before adding a number to a calling cadence helps filter out undeliverable entries — improving delivery rates and reducing spend on numbers that can never receive the message.
How do I get a Plivo phone number for a specific country or area code?
Use the Buy a phone number action. Specify the target country ISO code and optionally a state or area code prefix, and Actionist searches the available number inventory and rents the first matching number to your account. Once rented, the number appears in your Plivo Console and can be assigned to agents, campaigns, or inbound routing rules. Use the List account phone numbers action to review your current inventory and the Release a phone number action when a number is no longer needed.
Can Actionist retrieve Plivo call recordings for QA or compliance?
Yes — the List recordings and Get a recording actions let agents fetch recording metadata and download URLs for completed calls. Recordings are stored in Plivo for 90 days by default. Agents can pull random samples for QA workflows, attach recording URLs to CRM records after calls, or retrieve all recordings for a specific date range and upload them to a long-term archive bucket for compliance holds. Recording must be enabled in the call's XML flow (using the Record XML element or the recordSession parameter on the call API).
What is the difference between Make an outbound call and Send an SMS in Plivo?
Send an SMS message is a one-way text delivery — the agent sends a message and can later check its delivery status. Make an outbound call initiates a live two-way voice connection: the call follows XML instructions you provide (text-to-speech prompts, DTMF capture, recording, transfers) and can interact with the recipient in real time. For automated notifications, SMS is simpler and cheaper. For interactive flows — payment confirmations with press-1 options, appointment confirmations with reschedule capture, or voicemail drops — an outbound call gives you more control over the conversation.
Does Plivo work in my country?
Plivo supports SMS messaging in 190+ countries and voice calling in 65+ countries, with local phone number availability in over 65 countries. Coverage and features vary by country — some markets have additional compliance requirements (for example, India requires DLT registration for transactional SMS). Check plivo.com/coverage for the latest country-level breakdown. For countries where Plivo doesn't offer local numbers, international calling from a US or UK number is usually still available.
