Send, track, and manage transactional emails at scale

MarketingEmailCommunicationDeveloperAutomationEmail Marketing

Mandrill is Mailchimp's transactional email API — built for sending one-to-one emails triggered by user actions like purchases, password resets, and account notifications. It provides high-deliverability infrastructure, template management, per-message delivery tracking, sender reputation monitoring, and a rejection denylist for suppression management. Connect it to Actionist and your agents can send personalized transactional emails from any data source, confirm delivery status for every critical send, manage suppression lists across systems, monitor sender health proactively, and maintain compliance documentation — all without manual dashboard visits.

Payment confirmation email sent and delivery verified

When a Stripe payment succeeds, the agent fetches the customer's order data from Google Sheets, sends a branded payment confirmation email through the Mandrill template, confirms delivery status, and logs the message ID to HubSpot — all before the customer reaches the confirmation page.

What your team gets back — two angles: what you stop doing manually, and what that's worth.

What you do manually today

With Actionist

What your agent runs for you

  • Sales
    20 min / week
Manual proposal and contract email composition

Sales reps manually draft confirmation emails for each proposal sent, copy-paste the client's details, and have no systematic way to confirm whether critical contract emails were actually delivered.

    Sales Agent
    0 min
Agent sends and confirms deal milestone emails automatically

When a deal moves to 'Contract Sent', the agent dispatches a contract delivery email via Mandrill template, logs the message ID to the CRM, and confirms delivery — all within about a minute of the deal stage change.

  • Marketing
    30 min / week
Reactive deliverability monitoring via dashboard checks

Marketing teams log into the Mandrill dashboard manually each week, check tag-level stats individually, and often discover deliverability problems only after bounce rates have already triggered ISP filtering.

    Marketing Agent
    0 min
Agent monitors tag delivery rates and flags issues proactively

Every week the Marketing Agent calls List Tags, reviews delivery and bounce rates for all active sending tags, and posts an alert to Slack if any tag approaches risk thresholds — before reputation damage occurs.

  • Customer Support
    25 min / week
No systematic confirmation email delivery tracking

Support teams send ticket acknowledgments but have no automated check on whether they were delivered — customers report not receiving confirmations only after a follow-up call, by which time the SLA may have slipped.

    Customer Support Agent
    0 min
Agent verifies ticket confirmation delivery and re-routes on bounce

After sending each ticket confirmation, the Support Agent calls Get Message Info to verify delivery. If the email bounced, it flags the ticket for alternate contact before the SLA window closes.

  • Human Resources
    15 min / week
Manual new hire welcome email drafting

HR coordinators individually draft or copy-paste welcome emails for each new hire, often inconsistently formatted, with no confirmation that emails were actually delivered before the start date.

    Human Resources Agent
    0 min
Agent dispatches and confirms new hire welcome emails on a schedule

Every Thursday, the HR Agent sends personalized welcome emails to all upcoming new hires via the Mandrill template, confirms delivery, and notifies the HR team in Slack — without a single manual email drafted.

  • Finance
    25 min / week
    Manual overdue invoice reminder emails

Finance team members manually identify overdue invoices, draft individual reminder emails, and have no systematic record of whether the reminder was delivered — some invoices get missed entirely or receive a second reminder before the first is confirmed received.

    Finance Agent
    0 min
Agent sends overdue reminders and logs delivery confirmation to AR tracker

The Finance Agent identifies overdue invoices weekly, sends personalized reminders via the 'invoice-overdue' Mandrill template, confirms delivery, and logs message IDs to the accounts receivable tracker — no manual chase email drafting.

  • Operations
    35 min / week
    Reactive sender reputation management

Operations teams check sending infrastructure health reactively — often discovering elevated bounce rates, denylist growth, or spam complaints only after delivery rates have already degraded and email revenue is at risk.

    Operations Agent
    0 min
Agent runs weekly sender health checks and denylist growth reports

Every Monday, the Operations Agent calls List Senders and Get Sender Info for all active sending domains, compiles reputation metrics, and posts a health dashboard to Slack before any high-volume sends begin.

  • Legal
    20 min / week
Manual GDPR email compliance and tracking

Legal teams manually draft DSAR acknowledgment emails, log send times by hand, and manage suppression requests by individually updating the Mandrill denylist through the dashboard — with no audit trail connecting each action to the originating request.

    Legal Agent
    0 min
Agent sends GDPR compliance emails and maintains delivery audit trail

The Legal Agent sends DSAR acknowledgments via Mandrill template, confirms delivery, logs message IDs to the compliance register, and handles right-to-erasure suppression — all systematically documented for regulatory evidence.

How to plug Mandrill into Actionist

Pick the connection method that suits your environment.

Connect Actionist to Mandrill using an API key generated in your Mandrill account settings. The API key grants Actionist permission to send messages, manage templates, query message history, and manage your rejection denylist.

1
Open Mandrill Settings

Log in to your Mandrill account at mandrillapp.com. Go to Settings → API Keys.

2
Generate and copy your API key

Click '+ New API Key', give it a label (e.g. 'Actionist'), and click Create API Key. Copy the key immediately — Mandrill will not show it again after you navigate away.

3
Paste into Actionist and test

Paste the API key into Actionist's Mandrill connection screen and click Test connection. Actionist runs a read-only ping to confirm the credentials are valid before any sends are attempted.

FAQs

Questions about Mandrill + Actionist

How do I connect Actionist to Mandrill?
Go to the Apps tab in Actionist, find Mandrill, and click Connect. You will need a Mandrill API key — log in to your Mandrill account (or the Mailchimp Transactional dashboard at mandrillapp.com), go to Settings, and generate a new API key under the API Keys section. Paste that key into Actionist's connection screen and click Test connection. Actionist runs a read-only ping to confirm the handshake before any sends are attempted.
Does Mandrill require a separate account from Mailchimp?
Mandrill requires an active Mailchimp paid plan — it is a Mailchimp add-on and cannot be purchased standalone. Once your Mailchimp account has transactional email enabled, you generate API keys from the Mandrill dashboard at mandrillapp.com → Settings → API Keys. Each API key inherits account-level sending permissions. You can create multiple keys to scope access by team or use case, and revoke any key without affecting others.
Can I combine Mandrill with other apps in the same Actionist agent task?
Yes. Any Actionist agent that uses Mandrill can combine it with other connected apps in the same scheduled agent task. Common patterns: pull recipient data from Google Sheets or a CRM, send a transactional email via Mandrill, then log the result back to Notion or update a HubSpot deal. Mandrill's response for each send — including message ID and queued status — is available as structured output for downstream steps.
What email lifecycle events can Actionist react to from Mandrill?
Mandrill's webhook system fires events for every significant email lifecycle moment: send, deferral, hard bounce, soft bounce, delivery, open, click, spam complaint, unsubscribe, and reject. To receive these events in Actionist, configure a webhook URL in Mandrill under Settings → Webhooks and select the event types to listen for. Actionist can then react to inbound webhook payloads within about a minute of the event occurring — for example, flagging a hard bounce in your CRM or sending a re-engagement sequence when a critical transactional email goes unopened.
Can I use Mandrill email templates and pass dynamic variables through Actionist?
Yes. Use the Send Message Using Template action to reference any template you have built in the Mandrill UI or created via the API. Pass merge variables (global_merge_vars or per-recipient merge_vars) as parameters in the action — Actionist populates these from data pulled from other apps before the send step runs. This is the standard pattern for personalized transactional emails: order IDs from Stripe, customer names from HubSpot, reset tokens from your app database.
Can I send to multiple recipients in one Mandrill action call?
Mandrill's Send New Message action accepts one or many recipients in a single API call. You can pass a list of recipient objects (each with an email address, name, and per-recipient merge variables) and Mandrill sends each message individually but processes them as a batch. For large lists, break the list into chunks of up to 1,000 recipients before passing to the action — Actionist agents handle the chunking logic as part of the task definition.
How does Mandrill's rejection denylist work and can Actionist manage it?
Mandrill's rejection denylist records email addresses that have hard-bounced, unsubscribed, or reported spam. When an address is on the denylist, Mandrill silently rejects sends to it without consuming credits or damaging your sender reputation. Actionist agents can query the denylist before dispatching a batch, add addresses programmatically after a bounce event, or remove an address when a contact updates their email — keeping your sending reputation clean without manual dashboard work.
How do I monitor delivery rates and open rates using Actionist?
Mandrill does not offer native open and click event triggers in the same polling model as marketing email platforms — it fires these as webhook POST events. The practical pattern in Actionist is to set up a webhook endpoint that receives Mandrill's event batches and routes them into an agent task. For scheduled monitoring (e.g. daily delivery rate checks), use the Search Messages action to pull recent message history filtered by tag, sender, or date range, and push the aggregated stats to a dashboard or alert if delivery rates drop below threshold.
