Query real-time and forecast air quality data from 2,500+ US monitoring stations

AnalyticsDeveloperAutomationCloud & InfrastructureMonitoring & Alerts

AirNow is the US Environmental Protection Agency's official air quality information platform, aggregating real-time AQI observations from over 2,500 monitoring stations and daily forecasts for more than 500 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Connect it to Actionist and your agents can pull current AQI readings by ZIP code or coordinates, fetch next-day forecasts before outdoor events, retrieve pollutant-level breakdowns for PM2.5 and ozone, and monitor geographic bounding-box data for facilities across multiple sites — all without a developer writing a single HTTP call.

What your agent runs for you

  • Sales
    25 min / week
    Manual AQI research per listing

Sales reps visit AirNow.gov, type in a ZIP code, screenshot the reading, and paste it into the listing notes — repeating for each property before every buyer inquiry.

    Sales Agent
    0 min
Agent enriches all listing records automatically

The Sales Agent queries current AQI for every active listing ZIP on Monday morning and writes the reading directly to the CRM record — reps answer air-quality questions with live data before the question is asked.

  • Marketing
    20 min / week
    Manual pre-event AQI check

The event coordinator manually checks AirNow the morning of each outdoor activation and scrambles to communicate changes to attendees if the air quality is poor.

    Marketing Agent
    0 min
Agent delivers go/no-go 18 hours in advance

The Marketing Agent checks the next-day forecast for each event venue the evening before and posts a go/no-go decision with EPA guidance text — giving the team time to communicate changes before attendees have already left home.

  • Customer Support
    18 min / week
Support agents look up AQI during calls

When customers call asking about air quality, support agents put them on hold, open AirNow.gov, find the relevant reading, and try to explain AQI categories from memory.

    Customer Support Agent
    0 min
Agent pre-loads AQI data before the queue opens

The Support Agent fetches current AQI and EPA guidance descriptions for all key service regions each morning, so agents have verified data and correct language in front of them before the first call arrives.

  • Human Resources
    30 min / week
Reactive employee advisories after someone checks the news

HR learns about poor air quality from a news alert or an employee complaint, then writes an advisory from memory and sends it mid-morning — by which point most employees have already commuted.

    Human Resources Agent
    0 min
Agent sends proactive advisories before the commute

The HR Agent checks current AQI for all office ZIPs at 7 AM and sends advisories with EPA-standard guidance text to employees in affected locations — before anyone has left for work.

  • Finance
    60 min / week
Environmental consultant for insurance renewal data

Finance engages an environmental consultant to pull air-quality exposure data for the property portfolio ahead of each insurance renewal — a process that takes days and costs hundreds of dollars per property.

    Finance Agent
    0 min
Agent generates portfolio air-quality report automatically

The Finance Agent pulls 12 months of historical AQI for every portfolio ZIP and generates the air-quality exposure report before the renewal meeting — EPA-sourced, formatted, and attached to the renewal pack without a consultant.

  • Operations
    45 min / week
EHS manager manually checks AirNow every morning

The EHS manager opens AirNow.gov each morning, checks each facility one by one, and sends manual alerts to site managers if any location is elevated — often after the first shift has already begun.

    Operations Agent
    0 min
Agent checks all facilities and triggers restrictions before 6:30 AM

The Operations Agent queries current AQI for all facility coordinates at 6:30 AM and automatically sends restriction briefs to site managers for any location above AQI 100 — before the first shift begins, not during it.

  • Legal
    90 min / week
Manual EPA data retrieval for each compliance case

Legal staff manually navigate AirNow's historical tools or contact EPA's data management center to retrieve air-quality readings for specific dates and locations — a research task that can take half a day per case.

    Legal Agent
    0 min
Agent attaches historical AQI to case files automatically

The Legal Agent retrieves historical AQI by GPS coordinates for every open compliance case each Monday morning and attaches the EPA-sourced data to the case file — the research is done before the attorney opens the file.

FAQs

Questions about AirNow + Actionist

How does Actionist connect to AirNow?
AirNow uses a simple API key. Register a free account at airnowapi.org — EPA typically approves accounts within one business day. Once approved, your key appears on the account dashboard. Open the Apps tab in Actionist, find AirNow, paste the key, and Actionist runs a test call to confirm the connection before any agent actions run. No OAuth, no browser pop-up, no expiring tokens.
Is the AirNow API free to use?
Yes. The AirNow API is a free public service operated by the US Environmental Protection Agency. You do need to register for an account at airnowapi.org to obtain an API key, but there is no cost. The API is rate-limited — calls for a given key are capped per hour — so Actionist's scheduled agent tasks are designed to batch location lookups efficiently and stay within those limits.
How current is the air quality data from AirNow?
AirNow observations are updated approximately once per hour from over 2,500 monitoring stations across the US, Canada, and Mexico. When an agent calls Get Current AQI by ZIP Code, the returned reading reflects the most recent hourly update — typically within the past 60 minutes. Forecasts are issued once per day by local air quality agencies. The data should be treated as preliminary and informational; it is not intended for regulatory compliance determinations, for which EPA's official Air Quality System (AQS) is the appropriate source.
Can I query air quality for locations outside the United States?
AirNow's primary coverage is the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories. It also includes some coverage in Canada and Mexico through partnerships with Environment Canada and Mexican agencies. Coverage outside those regions is limited or unavailable. For international air-quality data, consider pairing Actionist with an alternative source such as the OpenAQ or IQAir APIs alongside AirNow.
What pollutants does AirNow report on?
AirNow reports AQI values for the six criteria pollutants regulated under the US Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone (O3), particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller (PM2.5), particulate matter 10 microns or smaller (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The composite AQI for a reporting area is the highest individual pollutant AQI at that time. Actionist can retrieve the composite value or, using the pollutant breakdown action, the individual reading per pollutant.
Can AirNow trigger an agent automatically when air quality changes?
AirNow does not provide webhooks or push notifications — it is a polling API only. In Actionist, the recommended pattern is a scheduled agent task that checks AQI on a cadence (every hour, every morning, etc.) and runs conditional logic based on the returned value. For example: check current AQI every hour; if the category changes from Moderate to Unhealthy, post an alert to Slack. This achieves the same practical result as a real-time trigger, with readings available within about a minute of each hourly AirNow data refresh.
How far back does the AirNow historical data go?
The AirNow API's historical endpoints provide access to past observations and forecasts going back several years, though the exact archive depth varies by reporting area. For most major US cities, multi-year historical data is available. For very rural monitoring stations with limited data, older records may be sparse. If you need an authoritative, complete historical record for regulatory purposes, EPA's Air Quality System (AQS) database is the official long-term archive.
Can the AirNow data be used for regulatory compliance decisions?
No — AirNow's own documentation explicitly states that the data is preliminary and should not be used to formulate or support regulatory decisions, government mandates, or official compliance determinations. The data is accurate and authoritative for operational and informational use (employee advisories, event planning, risk monitoring), but official regulatory compliance requires data from EPA's Air Quality System. Actionist uses the AirNow data accordingly — for operational monitoring and communications, not regulatory record-keeping.
